Emmanuel Goldstein was an Oceanian revolutionary and former member of the Party which controlled Oceania during the late 20th century. In the early days of the revolution that resulted in the inception of Ingsoc government he was an influential Party member, occupying a position in the top ranks. However Goldstein broke away from the Party early on claiming that the revolution had been betrayed and denounced the dictatorship of the Party.[1] Goldstein founded "The Brotherhood" in order to combat the Party of Oceania. Goldstein was an advocate of freedom of speech, the press, assembly and thought. [2]
